Last Saturday, the 7th of February, my dedicated husband put himself and Melanie on a plane and flew out to Omaha to meet me and spend the week with my family in Iowa. This is a trip for the memory book, poor guy…the day didn’t start very good for him and Melanie. After being sick all week with a cold and sinus infection, Jason woke Melanie up at 4am only to discover that she was “HOT!” She has a temperature of 102 degrees. So he contemplates calling me and telling me that they aren’t coming, but he knows just how much this trip and visit with my family means to me so he gives her Tylenol and leaves for the airport. While checking in for his flight online, he accidentally upgrades their seats to first class from Denver to Omaha and is unable to fix it, but it was probably for the best as you soon will discover, God was really looking out for him when that happened. So, they take off and she sleeps for the first flight. (He took her car seat on the plane and I do not think we will ever do that again, what a hassle and pain in the neck and back and the rest of the body, plus they don’t really fit in the seats all that well anyway.) On the second flight, as they sit themselves down in those nice plush first class seats, expecting to enjoy all the extra services and leg room that first class has to offer, Melanie tells him that she is hot. He knows and feeds her some chips. Then just as the plane is taxing on the runway, Melanie gets sick and vomits all over herself and the car seat and of course there is nothing anyone can do to help clean it up until they get in the air. Poor guy, how embarrassing and how awful that must have been. I know he wanted so dearly to pull this off without any issues or drama. Once they are able the stewardesses help him clean up as best they can, but there is only so much cleaning you can do on an airplane.
So, back in Omaha, my sister and I are shopping and having breakfast and we head to the airport to meet them. I was so excited and relieved that they were going to be there soon, I had no idea of Melanie’s fever and the awful event that just transpired. Finally, I saw them both walking up the ramp in the terminal and Melanie sees me and she starts running towards me and we hug and we are just holding each other. I look up at Jason, who for some reason looks completely defeated, exhausted and drained. I am wondering what could be wrong and then I get a whiff, of something that smells like vomit and tacos…and then I realize that there is really something wrong here. He tells me all that had happened and I feel pretty awful, but realize that someday I will laugh about this and hopefully he will too. I am so thankful that my loving husband would do all of this for me.
My sister welcomed Melanie with a brand-new baby stroller and baby doll! Melanie loved that and pushed it all over the airport while we were getting luggage and the rental car. Kerri was so excited to finally get to see her niece and how much she has grown in 10 months. Then Melanie asked us, “Where are my cousins?” And that my friends is a story for another entry in the Haught Family Chronicles.
