Ok, I know strange title to a post, huh!? But both are relevant to what has been happening around our house for the last few weeks. I had my gall bladder removed on Dec 6 and 2 days later Melanie had her tonsils removed and ear tubes replaced. I am always fascinated with the little organs that God placed in our body and how for the most part we can live without them. How did people discover that we don’t need them in the first place – all experimental surgeries at one point in time I guess.
A few weeks back when I had my other surgery, my fertility specialist asked me if I was having nausea, pain on my right side in the rib cage, diarrhea or vomiting after eating, I thankfully replied, NO! Sounds awful. Well, he said – your gall bladder looks awfully large so you should have it checked out. So, after an ultra sound, it revealed that I had 1 gall stone – a large one. Thankfully a large one is better than a small one! Small ones can block the bile duct or get stuck in it which is worse than just having a big stone in the bladder. Ok, so now what. Well, a general surgeon said that I should get my gall bladder removed asap. He was willing to do the surgery the next day! I am a planner, so that didn’t fit my style one bit. So, we scheduled it. He also warned me, that even though I didn’t have symptoms now, if I was to get pregnant (which is our goal) and I started having those symptoms, that he wouldn’t be able to do a thing about it until after the baby was born! The thought of all those symptoms on top of the pregnancy symptoms, made me very fearful and ready for surgery. I must admit though, before this I didn’t even know what the function of the gall bladder was! But now I know. And a week post op I am happy to report that despite the incision marks (4 to be exact) I feel pretty good.
During the same time, Melanie was seen by her ENT Doc and we discovered that her ear is not draining without the tube being in place, so we had to schedule surgery for that too and he advised us to have her tonsils removed as well to help her ears drain. He said her tonsils were a 3 out of 4 – 4 being the size of grown adult male! Can you imagine? I can’t poor baby! So, I thought, ok, we will do her surgery the week before mine, and then I noticed her Christmas program was scheduled that week – Nope, can’t to that to her! She has been looking forward to her program and singing the songs since Sept. So, after consultation with Jason, we just thought ok, lets do both her surgery and mine the same week! Well, I know sounds crazy huh!? But, it actually worked out pretty good. We all were home together recuperating while Jason took good care of us!
Yesterday, Melanie got the clear to eat whatever foods she wants! Yeah! Her diet has consisted of yogurt and oatmeal for a week! She had a ice-cream a couple times, but wasn’t interested in all the traditional stuff! I was running out of ideas of soft foods to offer her, but she survived! Yesterday, she at chicken noodle soup, fruit, grilled cheese, Mac n cheese, cereal, bread, tomatoes, grapes and more cereal all after lunch! I figure she has some meals to catch up on. My niece lost 10 lbs when she had her tonsils out, Melanie doesn’t have 10 pounds to loose!
So, now you know why I haven’t been posting much these days!
