Bentley, the dog…

Ok, so we decided to get Melanie a dog.  Bentley is his name and he is a beagle.  They are cute together.  He is 2, used to living in an apartment in Los Angeles, with his littermate, Marley.  So, needless to say, there have been some adjustments.

Day 1, Friday – brought him home.  He cried and howled the whole way home as I took him from his littermate.  So sad!  I prayed the whole way, that he would be a blessing to our family.  Melanie’s first words – Mommy, can I keep him forever!  and they were off and running.IMG_4180 IMG_4181 IMG_4166 IMG_4168 IMG_4169 IMG_4175 IMG_4177

Day 2 – after barking for 2 hours that night – we decided to let him loose in the house.  He fell asleep next to our bed.  Cats don’t like him, he wants to chase the cats.  Oh, boy – what have I done.  He barks constantly if you aren’t in the same room as he.  I pray more – Lord, please!

Day 3 – Well, I put the kennel next to our bed and covered it with a blanket and he slept all night.  Thank you Lord!  He finally figured out how to go to the bathroom off the leash.  We left for church and when we returned, he shredded the edge of the 1st quilt I ever made – Jason is ready to give him back.  Melanie is now on her knees in the yard praying too!

Day 4 – He slept through the night again, in the kennel next to our bed.  After some sleep, Jason has changed his mind.  He is slowly relaxing.  Still has anxiety to be outside all alone.  But it is getting better.  He finally jumped up on my lap last night and slept while I read.

Day 5 – I am home with him today.  I forgot that Trixie was in the dining room and I let Bentley in the house.  Well, he chased her and cornered her in the hallway.  He was barking at her, no biting or anything and she reached out with her claws and swiped his nose – drew blood – he backed up and I decided to let this play out a little more – she swiped him again near the eye.  And I must say, he hasn’t barked at the cats since.  So, maybe he learned his lesson.  So with blood dripping off his sweet nose I put him back outside and take Melanie to school.  I just need to get him used to being by himself.  He barks, then goes and plays, then barks, then goes and plays.  So in an effort to keep the peace in neighborhood, I let him back inside for a couple hours and he sleeps, in my office while I work.  Then tonight – Melanie and Bentley lay on the doggie bed together and watch cartoons.  They are bonding even more.  Then I go to give Melanie a bath and  - well the pics speak a thousand words.

So why not give Bentley a bath too!

I think he will be great – once he learns that it is ok to be by yourself!
